Dysphagia Awareness Training

Cornwall Speech Therapy provides training sessions for staff working in Care Homes including those specializing in care for adults with learning disabilities.

Various groups sizes can be accommodated and training can be tailored to the requirements of the team.

Suitable for Nurses, HCAs, Support Workers, Catering staff and managers – anyone with a direct or indirect role in the preparation of food or assisting with feeding.

Training includes an emphasis on practical sessions to help improve skills and awareness in this area including the International Dysphagia Diet Standardization Initiative (IDDSI).

Learning Objectives

Training will focus on the following areas:

  • The normal swallow.
  • Common causes of swallowing problems (dysphagia).
  • How to identify swallowing dysphagia.
  • The complications of dysphagia – pneumonia, choking etc.
  • How modifications to food can help including IDDSI levels.
  • Practical elements to help reduce dysphagia.
  • When to refer to Speech and Language Therapy for advice.
  • Oral hygiene and why it is important.
